MOSKISA FOOTBALL ACADEMY OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION

INTRODUCTION

Who are we?

MOSKISA football academy is a home for talented Street Children and youths. As an academy, MOSKISA gives Street Children and youths a place to sleep, food to eat, clothes to wear and dream about their future. MOSKISA offers access to professional football coaches who volunteer to use their time and skills to bring the most out of the underprivileged Street Children and youths. In MOSKISA we aspire to become football professionals blending together care and excellence through sports training, and that’s what defines us. Our coaches are committed to working hard in supporting talented Street Children and youths in six important areas namely; Physical fitness, Technical abilities, Tactical awareness, psychological stability, good nutrition and academic aspect.

When we started?

MOSKISA FOOTBALL ACADEMY was launched officially on 10th October 2017 after a series of successful children and youth summer camps during the year 2013-2016. The idea for having a football academy came about after organizing several Street Children and youth’s summer camps. During these camps, the Street Children and youths were offered foods, clothes, games and psychological mentorship. After couple of weeks on the camp, the Street Children and youths received wealth of knowledge on drug abuse, sex health, good moral behaviours and they were willing to change after couple of group activities.

How have we moved on?

In 2020 we received significant support from local community after the success of our previous camps. At that point we were moved with compassion for the Street Children and youths and learned the benefits of camping services to the kids. Then we started MOSKISA football campus to offer a home for Street Children and youths to learn, play and sleep while offered a proper nutrition the entire time.

Our achievement so far

After years of operation we have seen tremendous to the Street Children and youths under our care. Some of our kids received scholarships in international schools and universities; some have joined professional youth clubs, some have joined youth national teams and some have received professional contracts in both local clubs and international clubs.

Our impact to the community so far

Among many, we have witness a number of students from our program going back to school and do well at their academics. MOSKISA football academy has set a minimum score grade at C to motivate high performance. Street Children and youths would have to attain the minimum score grade while still attending football programs. This has raised aspiration levels among the Street Children and youths to go to school and focus on their studies hence reduces the level of failures.

HOW DO WE DELIVER?

Physical Fitness

Our fitness coach offer an excellent fitness training and after couple of weeks our players run different physical fitness tests such as stamina test, speed and acceleration test, aerobic test, strength test and flexibility test. These routines test help to ensure our players maintain their fitness level at a required status.

Tactical and technique

Each age category has its own needs, for the younger group of 7-13 years; we focus on developing good ball basics (elementary level) focus on ball techniques. The age of 13-15 we develop the need to understand how to play on respective positions, and between the ages of 15-20 we develop their tactical awareness toward becoming more competitive. We have a coaching program that focus on these areas throughout the year which has been endorsed by our partner coaches from Europe such as ADTL Sports Agency

Psychological stability

This is an important area where we have a specialist in player’s psychology who volunteers once a week to come and meet with player both in private and as in group. In addition we also have important people like coaches, teachers, mentors, former players, etc. to have weekly talk with the players. Our own coaches also deliver private sessions with individual players in an often occasion. This help the players to stay focused.

Nutritional Aspect

Proper nutritional plan has been set in place to ensure the Street Children and youths gain enough energy during their training sessions. As part of motivation, those Street Children and youths who perform better or rather say work harder during training are given extra protein and carbohydrate to encourage others to explore their full potential.

Academic Aspect

MOSKISA football academy was started with one purpose, to offer life-changing opportunities to Street Children and youths who have a passion for the game. Among many other MOSKISA offers a platform to the Street Children and youths to learn different life skills such as;

I. International Languages (Spanish, English, German, French)
II. Art and designing
III. Music and Dance
IV. Management and Entrepreneurship
V. Leadership

MISSION STATEMENT

We hope to “Create a sustainable and self-reliant society” by combining sports and academics. MOSKISA football academy uses sport education model particularly through football as an entry point to Street Children and youths and there after present them with broader opportunities for their development. This spans introducing them to learning nurturing aspirations for achieving while investing in their natural talents. Malcolm X said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”. We believe that these Street Children and youths who go through our programs their lives will not remain the same but they will move from poverty to stable living; this has proven to be a success in our early years.

OUR STRATEGY

Where Do We Come In?

Anthony J. D’Angelo once said, “Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow”. MOSKISA football academy understands how passionate the Street Children and youths are when it comes to sport especially football. These Street Children and youths will do anything just to be part of the football training offered at our academy. We are using that leverage to help these Street Children and youths get proper education such as;

I. Formal education

For those who attend schools during the day, we have set an average score (C) that they must attain so they can be part of the football sessions during the evening and weekends. This is used as a motivation for learning and helps them keep focusing on their academics.

II. Informal education

International languages, environmental sustainability, art, and design are well taught to create a backup solution to eradicate poverty if a child fails to reach the highest level of a professional football career.

HOW DO WE MEASURE SUCCESS?

Career Development

Street Children and youths at the academy will get a chance to join youth national teams, football trials; senior players will get professional contracts for both local and international clubs. Every year we wish to have at least one (1) player selected for the national youth team, at least one (1) senior player sign a professional contract and ten (10) players attend football trials. For example, Innocent Francis played for the U17 national team and currently has signed for the Tanzania premier league club (Polisi Tanzania FC U20). While he is here there have been plans to help him get a professional contract in a team in German next year.

Partnership

It’s very essential to develop a line of network with other organizations. We want to have exchange programs between experts and students. The collaboration with both local and international organizations will assure that we are in the right direction. We wish to create at least 3 partnerships yearly that will help to improve the status quo. For example, Reubens played for MOSKISA, and currently, he plays for Windsor FC Youth, UK.

Sponsorship/scholarship

It’s our goal to be able to find academic scholarships and sponsors in several areas for our Street Children and youths and sponsorship programs for the academy. We aim to have five (5) scholarships for the Street Children and youths at our academy. Yahaya Ndutu has been in a family of Moskisa football academy since when he was nine years old and we have seen a tremendous transformation in his academic life.

SUCCESS STORIES

Scholarship

In our first year of operation, we have been able to help one (1) boy named Yahaya Ndutu to get a full scholarship from International School Moshi (ISM) to join International Baccalaureate® (IB). This year he also received a scholarship to join Stanford University, California.

Local Partnership

It’s encouraging seeing local companies and organization shows trust and belief in our work. At the moment we have Zara Tours who provides transport on several occasions. We also have African Scenery Tours who have facilitated acquiring soccer gear and many more expenses. In addition, Moshi Hostel also works together with us by allocating volunteers across the world to come and work with players and staff for MOSKISA football academy in different areas being football, environment sustainability, art and design, and many other placements. BENDEL Memorial Secondary school has offered a football ground to be used twice a week by the MOSKISA football academy. Some other individuals donate to us with different food items from time to time and we are forever grateful to them all.

Career Development

At the moment we have two senior players playing in Professional teams. We also have youth players who have signed for Under 20 and Under 17 of premier league teams. In addition, we have girls who play for female premier league teams in Tanzania.NB: We believe that with more resources and support we can achieve greater things and impact more to our Street Children and youths and youths community.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR COLLABORATION

We seek partners, friends, organizations and companies who have the same vision to help the Street Children and youths with talents to reach their destiny as we have seen a good number of well decorated individuals sign professional contracts in different sectors. In Tanzania we have the like of Samatta, Msuva and many others who have managed to reach at high level of their career and there are many more much better with our support they can reach the top level. The below areas are the opportunities for collaboration.

I. Campus Rent
II. Meals
III. Soccer Equipments
IV. Art Equipments
V. Music Equipments
VI. Medical Insurance
VII. Training ground
VIII. Transport

We are indeed seeking for your collaboration to make this mission a reality. We are open to further discussion on how we can start step by step collaboration in various areas and we invite creativity and suggestions from our partners on how we can make this project a reality. Thanks for taking time to go through our proposal and we hope to hear soon from you. their.

CONCLUSION

Phase 1 (2017-2020)

This was during the start of MOSKISA as a day center where the Street Children and youths came from homes during the day and later during the night had to go back to the their homes, this was due to the challenge of accommodation and it gave us time to learn and be able to plan well for the next phase. This phase took us three years before we moved into the next phase and we needed enough time to plan for the next phase.

Phase 2 (2021-2023)

The second phase is the one that we are in where we have started a MOSKISA football academy campus where Street Children and youths are offered a home and many other needs are met at the campus. This phase also will take three years and we have managed to run for one year. It’s very crucial we develop a network of collaboration before we move to the last phase. This phase requires us to have enough partners who are likeminded who can collaborate with us in supporting these talented Street Children and youths. This phase last until 2023 then we will be able to move to the last phase.

Phase 3 (2024 - )

Phase three has focused in creating a sustainable project that can be able to serve more Street Children and youths in various sport areas. In phase three we have planned to start a MOSKISA SPORTS VILLAGE where not only Street Children and youths who are talented in football can get a home but all the talented Street Children and youths in various sports can be able to get a home and their talents can be nurtured toward becoming professional sportsmen and sportswomen of the future. In phase three we believe the project can be self sufficient by being able to generate income from various environmental friendly farming, agriculture, carpentry, welding, art, design and music projects that will be run at the MOSKISA Sports Village. Also after the years we have spent in phase one and phase two, it has shown that we will have Street Children and youths who have joined professional teams and we will be able to receive a training compensation fee from every child who sign a professional contract hence this will help to cover for various cost incurred during running of MOSKISA Sports Village.

BUDGET ESTIMATES

Campus rent

MOSKISA football academy campus is located at Soweto, Moshi Municipal, and Kilimanjaro. This is the home for the street children who have lacked home, education, and moral support. They say, “Charity begins at home”. It has been a hustle to pay the campus rent, so I had to work extra hard to earn income to support this mission. However recently due to COVID 19 I have faced a lot of difficulties raising money to pay the campus rent and this is where I need huge support to begin with. We deeply seek your support in paying for the rent per the attached invoice given by the landlord. Attached is the picture of MOSKISA football campus.

Football gears

At the moment we have very few football gears; we only have 4 soccer balls, 5 hurdles, 1 ladder, and 10 cones. This doesn’t match with the number of children we have at our academy, at the moment we have 15 players for under 12 age, 20 players for age under 13 age, 15 players for age under 17 age and 18 players for age under 20. This makes a total of 68 children of which among them stays at the campus and some attend the day program. Below are our yearly needs for training facilitation. NB: The current Exchange rate is 1 USD to 2319. The total amount is USD 5303.36

Medical insurance

Football is a physical game where a lot of injuries occur throughout the year. We had several cases where children had to be admitted to the hospital due to broken legs, hands, and other parts of the body. Due to lack of medical insurance, we have incurred serious expenses and at times we have failed to treat our children accordingly. This is an important area we also request your support so we can ensure good health and safety to our children throughout their program. The medical Insurance for each student is highlighted in yellow as the sum of Tsh. 50,400 which is equivalent to USD 21.73.

Food and meals

One of the biggest challenges that street children face is a lack of proper meals, we have tried to offer a better meal for them every year but we seek for your support to feed these street children. Most of our players can’t compete physically with other players due to their skinny bodies. We hope to improve their nutrition and help them to build a competitive body structure but also improve their health. Attached is a yearly requirement for the meals budget.

Artificial synthetic turf

As seen in the pictures, we have a football ground but it’s in the dust where our children suffer from health problems like breathing problems. This has endangered the health of our children and the majority has suffered from coughing and flu. We seek for your support to get the artificial grasses especially now that the government of Tanzania has eliminated the tax on all the artificial grasses imported into our country. However, we are looking for a Solar system water pump that will be a permanent solution that will help us to grow natural grasses and do irrigation. There is a river beside with enough access of water. The price for the artificial turf is USD 5.7/sqm and soccer field requirements are 7,140 sqm, so to have enough turf for the whole area will require 8000sqm.

Transport

Every time we go for friendly games we always rent a mini-bus to take the children to different locations, this has increased our running expensive from time to time and due to high fee for hiring these mini-buses we have failed to travel in different tournaments and when we do, we always take public transport of which it increases cost. From place to place we have to hire a different one and its logistic becomes a challenge and it’s not very safe for the children. We seek for your collaboration in getting a mini-bus that can accommodate 40 children.
