Kiviwama Conservation and Environmental Project in Moshi

Available for: Internship | Voluntary work

Kiviwama, a community-based organization established in 1999, stands as a beacon of environmental stewardship. With a primary focus on forest conservation, safeguarding natural spring water sources, and combating pollution, Kiviwama is making strides towards a greener and healthier ecosystem.

At the heart of Kiviwama’s initiatives lies a thriving tree nursery, a testament to their commitment to combat deforestation. Here, indigenous tree seedlings are meticulously nurtured and generously distributed to local farmers, schools, communities, and organizations, all free of charge. The nursery serves as a hub for cultivating trees with diverse purposes, from timber production to medicinal use, and even the creation of shade.

Yet, Kiviwama’s impact doesn’t end with the provision of seedlings. The organization is dedicated to educating the community about the repercussions of indiscriminate tree cutting. By fostering awareness, Kiviwama aims to inspire a collective responsibility for the environment.

The tree nursery also extends opportunities for involvement, welcoming both volunteers and practical trainees/interns. Engaging in the physical aspect of the work, participants in the program contribute to the entire nursery process—from collecting and sorting seeds to watering, weeding, mulching, sowing, mixing manure and soil, filling polybags with soil, and removing dead seedlings.

In essence, Kiviwama not only nurtures trees but also fosters a sense of environmental consciousness and community engagement, ensuring a sustainable and flourishing future for generations to come.
