Kibosho District Hospital

Available for: Elective, Internship and Voluntary work

Kibosho Hospital, nestled high on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in the lush rainforest zone, stands as a venerable healthcare institution in the Moshi area. Embarking on a journey through vast banana plantations, the road to the hospital winds through the steep slopes of the mountain, offering a picturesque view of the surroundings. The high altitude is palpable in the cooler temperature, and the lively presence of monkeys in the surrounding trees adds a unique touch to the atmosphere.

The hospital’s roots trace back to 1929 when it started as a dispensary—a single building with seven rooms and a few grass-thatched mud huts. Over the years, it has undergone significant expansions and developments. In the 1950s and 60s, wards for males, females, and pediatrics were established and remain operational to this day. Simultaneously, the maternity clinic, isolation wards, and personnel houses were constructed, marking milestones in the hospital’s growth.

Subsequent expansions saw the addition of offices for doctors, administrative spaces, a pharmacy, secretarial offices, a physiotherapy room, and a waiting area for the outpatient department. A separate building now houses the laboratory, x-ray department, medical records, and reception.

Presently, the hospital boasts 225 beds, catering to 120-150 outpatients daily, with approximately 100 deliveries each month. The hospital fosters a culture of continuous improvement through daily morning sessions, where doctors, clinical officers, heads of departments, and on-duty nurses engage in professional discussions and share experiences related to day-to-day patient management. Staff members are encouraged to contribute suggestions and comments to enhance healthcare delivery.

Kibosho Hospital is recognized for its exceptional dental and eye departments, offering top-tier services across the entire Kilimanjaro area. Beyond these, the hospital provides various services, including Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) clinics, Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT), Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMCT), Care and Treatment clinics (CTC), and Home-Based Care (HBC).

For aspiring interns, the opportunity to intern at Kibosho Hospital is open to those in their third year of studies or beyond. Interns are required to bring their own working clothes and shoes, along with an ample supply of gloves and hand disinfection liquid—a testament to the commitment to maintaining a high standard of hygiene and care.
